Are PPIs safe?

Throughout the U.S., people rely on pharmaceutical drugs to help them improve their health and quality of living. When information is withheld or a medication does not do what the medical company says it will do, the results can be devastating. Dangerous drugs can not only lead to serious side effects, but permanent disabilities and sometimes, death. One group of drugs that has been proven to fall into the category of dangerous drugs is PPIs.

PPI stands for proton pump inhibitor and this class of drugs is helpful for treating gastric acid problems like heartburn, ulcers, dyspepsia, stress gastritis, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and more. As the third-highest selling drug in the U.S., they bring in billions of dollars every year. The most popular drug containing PPIs is Nexium – the second highest selling drug compared to all other drugs. Although they are safe for the most part, one of the problems with these drugs is that they are overused and prescribed to people who suffer from mild heartburn.

Potential Dangers
Some of the more mild side effects of PPI use include: headaches, diarrhea, fatigue, abdominal pain, nausea, and dizziness. Although less common, they can also cause anxiety and depression. If you have contracted pancreatitis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, or erythema multiforme, you could be going through an idiosyncratic reaction. Studies have shown that it increases the risk of pneumonia and long-term use studies show that it increases the likelihood of bone fractures in people over fifty. In 2009, a report was released that suggested that ceasing medication would lead to increased symptoms. The Food and Drug Administration has since revised the labels for the drugs containing PPI so that people are aware of the potential risks they face by using the drug.
